Hosted, Never Hurried

A Gardien in Residence

James, our gardien, lives on the estate year-round and knows the house, its woods and the surrounding countryside by heart. Before you arrive, the larder is stocked to your list. While you are here, fires are laid, dinners can be cooked, and everything else is left entirely to you.

The House

Château de l'Angotière has stood in the Norman bocage since the sixteenth century, rebuilt and enlarged in the eighteenth. Two of its fireplaces are protected by the French state as Monuments Historiques: the dining room chimneypiece, dated 1717, and the great kitchen hearth, carved in the early 1500s.

Inside, one room opens into the next: a round library in the tower, a formal salon, a gallery sitting room, and a dining room laid for long dinners. Everyone gathers, sooner or later, in the kitchen, beside a hearth first lit some five hundred years ago.

Outside, sixty acres of protected parkland and woodland unfold from the lawns: a walled kitchen garden, a venerable cedar of Lebanon, and a woodland walk marked by fourteen carved stone Stations of the Cross. Mont-Saint-Michel, Bayeux and the landing beaches all lie within an hour, yet at night the only sound is the wind in the trees.
